Framing Statement:
The sources used during Project #1 were Lizzie Widdicombe’s article “The End of Food”, and my own personal “Favorite Meal Essay”. In Project 1 I combine these sources in attempt to convince readers of the luxury and privilege we have of consuming any kind of food that is not Soylent. I also combined these sources in order to show the difference between the utilization of Soylent, and the experiences we obtain from our food. As I tried to explain the differences between Soylent, and real food, I took a quote from the creator of Soylent, Rhinehart, where he said “we’ll see a separation between our meals for utility and function, and our meals for experience and socialization.” As I agreed with this idea of Rhinehart I stated after his quote that Soylent is best for obtaining nutrition, and that food is best for experience. I took a quote from my “Favorite Meal Essay” describing the experience I had while cooking with my grandmother, saying “…my grandmother would get the cheese. We always used american cheese, or sometimes pepper jack. Often we would eat the spare slices of cheese together as we prepared the rest of the meal.” After I used this quote from my “Favorite Meal Essay” I followed up by saying that I would not have the chance to have these experiences if Soylent were to completely replace all food. In other words, this example from Project #1 shows how I was able to demonstrate a connection between the two sources needed by using Rhinehart’s idea of Soylent being more of a utility, and food being more for experience.
